What will snow removal cost for your property this winter? You should be able to explore a useful starting number before a sales conversation. PlowWow’s free online snow removal calculator puts the working calculation in front of you: the clearing surfaces, provisional rates, service minimum, salt-only visits and GST.

It is a beta planning tool for Vancouver and the listed Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley municipalities. No name, phone number or email is required to see the result. It does not measure an address automatically, reserve a crew or turn a budget into a contract. It helps you ask better questions before the property review.

Two ways to get started

If you want a quick standard service example, enter your address and postal code in the estimator. Current normal-condition starting examples are $75 for a walkway and steps, $125 for a single driveway and walkway, and $150 for a storefront entrance and frontage, before GST. The stated scope matters; parking lots, delivery lanes and larger properties are separate.

If you manage shared walkways, a circular drive or an open parking area, use the measured-scope calculator. Choose your municipality and units, add the approximate pedestrian-route length and vehicle-clearing area, then view an itemized budget. The calculator does not use the building’s floor area as a substitute for the outdoor work.

A snow removal calculator that shows its work

The measured-scope beta starts with $0.15 per linear foot of common walkway and $0.015 per square foot of open clearing area. It applies a $175 minimum to a combined snow-and-salt visit. The minimum is a floor, not a fee added on top of an already calculated visit. These are provisional PlowWow operating rates, not surveyed Vancouver market averages.

For example, 100 linear feet of shared path contributes $15. An open clearing area of 10,000 square feet contributes $150. The measured subtotal is $165, so the minimum brings the combined visit to $175. It does not become $340. If the measured work totals more than $175, the calculation uses that larger figure.

You can enter metres and square metres or feet and square feet. The tool converts the inputs into the same underlying units, so describing the same surfaces in either system produces the same price. Changing the unit selector clears the measurements rather than silently treating a number of metres as the same number of feet.

Snowfall events and ice-control visits are different

Vancouver winter planning is about more than counting snowstorms. Additional ice-control work can be needed between clearing visits. In this beta, a salt-only visit is half the combined snow-and-salt rate. It is displayed separately so you can see how the winter scenario changes.

At the $175 combined minimum, ten combined visits and twenty additional salt-only visits produce a $3,500 working allowance before GST. Five per cent GST adds $175, making the illustrated total $3,675. The calculation is ten times $175 plus twenty times $87.50. It is not thirty full-price combined visits.

Those counts are editable assumptions. They are not a weather forecast, a promise of included visits or a cap on the work required. A prolonged storm may involve more than one clearing pass, while a snow-free cold period can still require treatment. The final proposal must define obligations and extraordinary-weather terms.

What the seasonal range means

The tool shows a working seasonal allowance and a planning range of 25 per cent below and above it, rounded outward to $100. This is a preliminary budgeting policy, not a statistically validated accuracy guarantee. It is useful for comparing your own scenarios while keeping the underlying assumptions visible.

A seasonal contract is more than that multiplication. Dates, trigger depths, response obligations, access, materials, service boundaries, standby requirements and any extra-work authorizations belong in the written agreement. Seasonal coverage, a five-visit package and a single visit are available for discussion; the calculator does not invent a package discount or confirm availability.

Ramps, steep access and larger properties need a closer look

A parkade ramp should never disappear into a generic square-foot number. Select the ramp warning if your site includes sloped vehicle access. The displayed standard-surface allowance then explicitly excludes ramp-specific labour, equipment and treatment pending review. A short steep ramp can require a different service plan from a broad, level surface.

For strata properties, identify front, rear and internal shared pedestrian routes. Mark connecting stairs and landings, entrance thresholds, gates, loading areas and snow-storage constraints. Individual-unit paths and stairs need explicit agreement. For a commercial property, describe the opening times and access routes that matter to the business. The calculator cannot infer those details from a municipality selection.

Save the number, then request the quote

Download the itemized result as a text estimate, or use print to save a PDF through your browser. The document includes the rates, measurements, visit assumptions and limitations. Downloading does not send an enquiry or authorize a charge.

When you are ready, enter the service address and postal code to continue to PlowWow’s formal quote request. The estimate travels in your browser session for review. Nothing is sent until you submit that separate enquiry. A property review is where scope, route capacity and the final price are confirmed.

Built to become more useful with real quoting work

We are improving the system around the questions property owners actually ask: what is included, which visits cost what, and what changes the price? Completed property reviews can help us compare preliminary assumptions with the work that was actually scoped. We will not describe untested accuracy as a guarantee.
